Nikhiel Deeplal is currently a National Executive Committee Member and the former Chairperson of Students for Law and Social Justice (SLSJ). SLSJ is a national student-based civil society organisation which engages in activism that seeks to engage students from different institutions of higher education in order to build a socially conscious generation.Under his leadership, the organisation played a pivotal role in the fight for free higher education in South Africa through mobilisation and participation in a Presidential Commission of Enquiry.

Nikhiel joined Lawyers for Human Rights- South Africa (LHR) as a Candidate Attorney in 2016, working in the Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme. He has an LL.B from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and is currently completing his LLM in International Trade Law. He has a certificate in International Relations from the Symbiosis International University, India and has also completed a short course in mediation at the Hague University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands.

Nikhiel has also worked for former Justice of the South African Constitutional Court, Justice Zak Yacoob and has consulted for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Foundation for Human Rights. He has also sat on the Southern African Debating Council, Executive Committee.He has a history in student and social activism and is passionate about youth empowerment.
